Analyzing Folktales Past and Present
For my unit plan, I decided to focus on folktales. Folktales are a category not normally covered by many English teachers (in my opinion). When I saw that the textbook I checked out from the library, Mirrors and Windows, contained a section on folktales, I became extremely excited. I believe that folktales are a great way to explore history and cultures. This unit describes a basic overview of folktales: typical characteristics, structure, and reasoning behind them. In this unit, students will be asked to analyze why folktales were not written, write their own folktales, and read folktales from other cultures. This should be a cultural experience that allows them to grow as writers and as to become more culturally aware. I focus more on the Writing Standards in this unit moreso than the Reading standards because I believe that folktales are a good medium to use to get students excited about writing, mostly because folktales are so familiar to them.

Weekly Timeline
Here is a weekly timeline overview. This overview gives the titles of the lesson, the type of lesson, and a brief synopsis.
Standards, Unit Objectives, and Unit Assessments
The Common Core Standards for English Literature and the North Carolina Essential Standards for Information and Technology, the Unit Objectives, and the Unit Assessments are listed here.
Differentiation
Differentiation is extremely important in any classroom. For this assignment, my SEC 300 class had to analyze the situation of a student named Lee and try to determine what we would do if Lee was our student. We also had to add differentiation into some of our lesson plans. My attempt at differentiation can be found here.
